The Flower Moon

This month's full moon takes place on May 18th at 2:11 PM Pacific Time and it is a busy full moon. Other names for this months full moon include Milk Moon, Corn Planting Moon, and Mother's Moon. The full moon in May marks the season for wild flowers, and mother's nursing their young; it is a time to plant seeds and harvest spring greens and wild spring crops.

At the same time as the moon becomes full it will also becomes void-of-course until 6:20 PM when it enters Sagittarius. At this time the full moon energy can be used to boost spell work, intention setting, even rituals; Sagittarius is a good time for making long term plans and plan for the future. Sagittarius is a fire sign so this full moon is a good time for some fire rituals.

Once in a Blue Moon

This months full moon is also a blue moon. That's right... it is a traditional blue moon. Traditionally the blue moon was the third of four full moons in an astronomical season. March's full moon fell on the spring equinox and this year June's full moon is on the 18th with the summer solstice being on the 21st; that makes May's full moon the third on this spring. We won't get another traditional blue moon until August 22, 2021.

How did the blue moon become the second full moon in a month?

Due to a misinterpretation of the definition of the traditional blue moon, in the 1940's people started referring to the second full month in a single month as the blue moon. Now we recognize both types of blue moon.
